“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” – Jeremiah 29:13
God wants us to pursue Him. He desires and craves intimacy with us. He longs to reveal His heart to us.
But often, we don’t perceive His invitation.
We feel disconnected from Him, yet we don’t seek Him. His Word tells us that as we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us (James 4:8).
Our relationship with our Heavenly Father is most important. We should nurture it. As He pursues us and loves us, so should we.
Seeking God is not complicated; it simply requires intentionality and commitment.
How, then, can we pursue Him wholeheartedly?
Discover His Character

Relationships are born out of knowledge of the other person. You cannot love nor genuinely engage with someone if you don’t truly know them.
Thus, to pursue God is to get to know Him. As with any relationship, this takes time and effort.
To discover God, His nature, and His character, we need to read His Word, the Bible. There is no shortcut, no alternative.
Through His Word, you’ll encounter Him. Ask God to give you the desire and commitment to read, even if you don’t feel like it.
A verse, a chapter, a book, whatever it is, read. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal Himself to you.
Then, commit to prayer. Prayer is simply communicating with God. Talk to Him about what you read in His Word, then listen. Practice being still in His Presence (Habakkuk 2:20) because He desires to speak to you, too.
Develop an awareness of His Presence. God is always here (Hebrews 13:5), yet we sometimes don’t notice Him.
As you go about your day, pause occasionally and meditate on His Presence. Recognize that He is with you, and soak it in.
Pay attention to what He may reveal: is He showing up as Your Provider, Comforter, Father?
Don’t despair if you don’t “get it” at first or if it feels uncomfortable. It takes time to be attuned spiritually. But persevere because He will not turn away from those who seek Him (Psalms 9:10).
Seek Intimacy With Him

To know God is to love Him (1 John 4:8). Love is connection and intimacy. Intimacy is ‘closeness and openness towards someone else’.
When we know who our God truly is, we naturally want to connect with Him. Cultivating intimacy with God means opening our hearts to Him without restraints.
It is coming to Him as we are and allowing Him to move in us as He wills.
Praise and worship open the door for this connection. They allow our souls to focus on God, His nature, His goodness, His work, and all He is.
We take our focus off ourselves and fix our eyes above (Colossians 3:2). Our souls can connect with their Creator without barriers.
“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.”- Psalm 100:1-2
Involve and invite Him into every aspect of your life. Talk to Him often, always. As you would talk to your best friend, talk to God. He is a better friend than any human being ever could be.
Whether you have a big community or are walking a season of solitude, He is here with and for you.
Take some time during the day to be alone with Him. Truly alone, with no distractions, interruptions, or other activities. Just you and Him.
Pour out your heart to Him, your pain and joy, your worries and anxieties, your losses and victories, and your fears and doubts.
Tell Him EVERYTHING. Nothing is too much for Him to handle.
And then, be still, be quiet. Listen to what He’s telling you. It may be a whisper, a thought, or an impression in your heart. It might even be silence. Whatever it is, don’t rush it.
Stay, and behold His glory (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Love Him Well

To love God is to obey Him (1 John 2:3-5). When we truly know and love God, we are led to obedience. We know His character; therefore, we know that what He asks us is for His glory and our own good.
His commands are not burdensome to those who love Him (1 John 5:3). We have no trouble carrying out God’s commands because love and affection for the world are no longer in us.
When we love Him, we want to please Him. We aim to do everything we do for His glory (1 Corinthians 10:23-33).
Obedience is God’s love language. We show we love Him when we keep His decrees.
“If you love me, obey my commandments.” – John 14:15
Conclusion

Seeking and pursuing God stem from a heart posture that desires true intimacy with the living God. Though His ways are unsearchable (Romans 11:33-36) and His greatness immeasurable (Job 36:26), we can know Him for who He is.
The pursuit of God is a fantastic journey, and it is a lifetime commitment. And the more you know Him, the more you’ll want to know Him.
If you genuinely desire to know Him, read His revealed Word. Install the Bible App on your devices, buy two Bibles from different translations, and create time to spend with your Maker. Love and obedience will naturally flow from knowledge.
A prayer for you to embark on this journey:
“Heavenly Father, thank you for revealing Your heart to me. I want to know You more and love You well. Grant me a heart that wants to pursue You. Renew my mind so that I focus solely on You. May I be driven by eternity all the days of my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.”
